BEATEN BY A BALLOON HAHA!

Seriously though if anything, Liverpool have been exposed for the shit side they are - without Gerrard and Torres you're NOTHING!

Everyone was banging on about how United would cope without Ronaldo and Tevez, well guess what - we're currently top of the table and it's the old boy Giggs doing all the damage this season.

Anyway Liverpool's title challenge is OVER, they can aim at securing 4th spot at the most now.

didn't united need an injury time equaliser against sunderland?and they were at home!
And most said they were outplayed...

But seriously do you think anyone really cares what some nomark who gets a boner from reading ceefax has to say? :P

Funny goal though. It should have been disallowed I reckon, bit like when the ball hits the ref and gives one team an advantage

lmfao @ omzy... perhaps you didn't notice that we were without mascherano and riera too, who god knows why, benitez left on the bench... he played a new formation and put the inexperience of jay spearing with the already-hated lucas in midfield... giving glen johnson a wing-back role...

it wasn't just that gerrard and torres were missing, it was a combination of things.

personally, i think benitez should sign the beachball in the january transfer window... it's scored more goals than lucas leiva has done all season :P

I can't see us getting a result against united, I hope I'm wrong. I think everyones going to turn on rafa soon, the media is gunning for him and fans are loosing patience, can't believe he took benayoun off! I'm going to two home games in November it's looking pretty poor at the minute.

Not too bothered about the champions league I'd like us to build a run and consolidate a top 4 finish.

@paco - Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. :( :(

And yes, Barcelona lost at home, Arse drew, and so did Inter. Such epic win everywhere tonight!

If we lose this weekend, I won't be as sad as I usually get, because this would mean that they'd have won at least 1 trophy this season (beating United), and Rafa would still have his job next season! :D :D It's such a win-win.

Well Gerrard limped off today with a groin strain, they said it's a precautionary measure, so it seems Rafa had Sunday afternoon in mind.

What about Torres, is he gonna be fit? One thing for sure, without those two they are a totally different side.

Alot of teams are TWO MAN TEAMS .. if Chelsea lost Terry and Drogba they'd struggle as well.

Sonu- thats a weak argument, united lost the best player in the world and teves over the summer, they have a vetren winger too.

The difference between liverpool n the teams above them is the quality in the SQUAD. I truelly believe United and Citeh have the best squads this season, Chelsea will finish above Citeh but thats because they are a better TEAM. Arsenal have a good squad but are probably missing one or two defensive back-up players.

Rafa had a good last season but he failed to make the right moves in the transfer market over the summer. Hence leaving you in the position your in. Plus Liverpool have one of the best academy teams around for the last few seasons but how many of these players have your seen being bled into the first team?

The Fat Spanish Waiter is the right man for the job but he needs to change something about the team and quick. Maybe a change in formation. Put Benayoun Riera on the wings and have Kuyt partnering somebody upfront to do all the donkey work.

Last season was a fluke for liverpool, they pull well above their weight......even last year would u say their team was better than Chelsea...not a chance. Chelsea had manager who didnt know/forgot how to manage a club.....let alone manage a club in England.

As Sun said United lost the worlds best player and possibly the best player to ever play in the EPL - plus tevez who is a quality player and a great addition to the squad. Ive heard alot of liverpool fan claim that united and chelsea have bought the league in the past - Liverpool have spent as much money as united over the last few year, but rafa has bought badly - with the exception of Torres.

I think Liverpool need to get rid of Rafa.....he has taken then as far as he can. If he stays i see Liverpool struggling to make the top 4 over the next few seasons and if that happens do u think Gerrard and especially Torres will stay?

Losing to Lyon last night didn't help either. The problem is if they get rid of Rafa now, which top class manager will they get, knowing that there is not a lot of moeny to spend at the club?

The amount of money rafa has spent is always highlighted... but his net spend is actually pretty low over his tenure.
You can argue he has gone through a lot of players... but most of those were for the youth and academy which its hoped will start to yield more players into the first team. That takes time. A lot of time.

OK he has bought some shyte players (josemi springs to mind, so does voronin) but that was all transition time from Houlliers squad to his own squad. He's had maybe £20m a year to spend... and never a squad strong enough to compete. So do you buy one class player a year or do you buy 3 players who strengthen the squad over a season? Thats the problem he has had. Nothing coming up from reserves and youth coupled with a weak squad and players who dont fit his system.

Liverpool have been in transition ever since he arrived. The youth system is far better than it was, bloated at the moment with too many young kids but if the thinking is "we can never afford to buy the best so have to nurture our own" then its his only option.
He started with a very very defensive team, grinding out results. And slowly its evolved to a point last season where there was enough quality and strength to play decent football.

This season see's a move to more expansive attacking play... but we dont have the squad to cope with injuries and missing the orchestrator in the middle.

Rafa will come good. He's coped with a poor inheritance and a squabbling married couple as bosses.
There is nobody better out there who would improve Liverpool.
And who in their right mind would come in as manager with the yanks still there?

I, for one, am glad Rafa has done us a favour and stuck around despite the best efforts of cockface and cuntface to run the club into the ground.

As for the two-man team comment...

Javier Mascherano. Played for Argies since he was 19. Has 55 caps. Diego has used every argie who can walk in his squads... this dude was a constant. Pure class.

Pepe Reina. Easily in the top three or four in the world. If not for Cassillas he'd be a regular for spain.

Jamie Carragher. One of the most consistent defenders of recent years. If not THE most consistent. Current woes are a change in style of play. Simple. Form might be down a tad but last night I dont think he put a foot wrong. Class is permanent. Even Mourinho once said he wished he could have a team of Carra's.

Dirk Kuyt. Always played for Holland. An ever present. Wouldnt call them a pub team exactly. First touch lets him down but positioning is always spot on.

Glen Johnson. Best right back in England and the attacking edge he has added to Liverpool is brilliant.

Daniel Agger. One of the most promising defenders in world football. Back from injury and hopefully his problems are behind him.

Insua is now in the argie squad and he gets better with each game.

Benny Noon... never rated him but since last season he has grown in stature. Proven everyone wrong.

One man team?? No chance. Poor squad? Yes.

It will come good. When the backs are to the walls Liverpool always come good.

2 arguments - one is that there was no backing in the summer (hmm ok fair play)

second is the 60 + players he bought in the last couple of years - most have been shite.

after 5 years you'd expect slightly better

but id keep him, i cant see anyone better coming in.

im sure its 60 players, something like that

Over 70 players mate.

But like I said... MOST of those were kids going into the youth system.

5 1/2 yrs... £110m net spend (roughly)
And from that he's always had to put in contract extensions and pay rises etc.
They were never seperate but part of his budget.

Works out to around £20m a year. Which does NOT buy you a world class player the likes of Torres, Gerrard, Drogba, Kaka etc.

Then look at the squad he inherited and where he's taken the club.

Kelly (had a brilliant debut last night) and Spearing are the first players from the youth setup to come through since Gerrard.

Bringing players through like that takes time. You dont buy a 16 yr old and put him straight in the first team. Hardly ever happens.

By the time they're 20... thats 4 years of development and 4 years of people saying "look at all the money he's spent".

The number of first team/squad players hasnt been that much for a club thats needed changing from youth level to board level!

Which players has Rafa been forced to sell to bring in new talent? You say his NET spend is low but it doesnt hide the fact that he has spent a lot of money on players.

But his failing this season have come due to him not making the right signings this summer. Its simple to see. But it goes back over not building a squad over several seasons. Loosing Arbeloa and Hyppia this summer has proved significant. If Carragher or Skertal was to get an injury tomorrow which class defender would replace them? Kyrgiakos? Degen?Doessena? i couldnt see any of these getting onto the bench of Arsenal, Manutd or Chelsea. Look at villa, spurs and citeh's back-up defenders and you'll probably see one better than yours.

Then lets look at the midfield, according to Sky sports you have only 6 Midfielders and 2 Attacking Mids. Not much depth there considering you have Lucas, Spearing and Plessis included in the 8.

"youth and academy which its hoped will start to yield more players into the first team" of these who has come into the first team, keep in mind Rafa has been manager for 6 seasons, so say he signed some 16yr olds in his first season (thats being generous) they would be 22 now and should be knocking on the first team door.

Hasnt been forced to sell but has had to get rid of a lot of players who weren't good enough.

Then the arguement is but he replaced crap with crap... fair enough... but they were moved on too and it was all part of building the team and club he wants for the long term.

This summer he bought in better players at greater expense and few in number... to which the cry is "the squad aint good enough, he didnt buy the right players".

Ye cant have it both ways folks.

And who could say johnson wasnt the right signing? Look at the way the team sets out to play. Attacking from the back and playing with greater width and more numbers in attack. Arbeloa could never play the way Johnson has been.

Losing alonso was a blow. Bought in Aquilani but we all knew he wouldnt play the first couple of months.

And then you talk of building a squad... How?? With Rick Parry doing the negotiations and buying?! That geezer was useless.

If carra or skertal get injured... we have Agger who is class. Kyrgiakos was bought in to make up the numbers whilst Agger was injured.

Players knocking on the first team door... Spearing has played a few games. Kelly played a blinder last night and looks a more than able deputy for Johnson. Insua is a regular in the first team.

Granted most of those bought in wont make the grade. But then, they never do.

To put it bluntly, the club is a helluva long way from where it was 5 yrs ago.
And credit for that must go to the manager.

Liverpool are never gonna go out and spend £50m on a single player. Wont happen.
Neither will Liverpool spend £100m in one transfer window to build a squad.

With the resources at his disposal and the building that was needed for long term success, Rafa has done brilliantly.

The press and some supporters have very short memories.

08/09 - 2nd 86 pts
07/08 - 4th 76 pts
06/07 -3rd 68pts (same as arsenal 4th)
05/06- 3rd 82pts
04/05- 5th 58 pts
03/04- 4th 60pts

GH
02/03- 5th 64pts
01/02- 2nd 80pts
00/01- 3rd 69pts
99/00- 4th 67pts

Rafa has been no better than Houllier IMO. He won the CL which was good obviously but hasnt offered much more than that. He has his first title challange last season and then fell out of that with many games to go. GH got Lpool to 2nd too.

As for the youngsters, just look at your neighbours (in Liverpool that is) at how they have been brining in the youth player through to the first team. Thats how you do it. As i said b4 liverpools youth team is the best in the country, its just ashame that they havnt been coming thru to the firsts.

How long will the likes of Mascha, Torres n Reina want to stay in England n at Liverpool if they are not going to compete for the title?

Get off the crack mate. The best in England? HAHAHAHA! You got ripped off for 18M and then you're paying him 140K quid a week. Haha, he's as good a defender as N'Gog is an attacker.

Most promising lawl, in his dreams maybe.

Sure he will, Nani has been in the Portugal squad for 5 years now and he's still shit.

Yeah, the next Messi surely.

I agree, you're not a one man team, you're a two man team.

First couple of months? That guy is average at best and has played 48 games in 3 seasons, I wouldn't pin my hopes on him if I were you.

40M for Aquilani and Johnson ROFL.

I wish you have a team of 11 Carraghers. A hugely average player, who said he'd rather miss a penalty for his country than his employers. He was fucking saved by Hyypia time and time again, and now it's showing when there's no one to save his ass.

pretty much summed it up, i dnt think united deserved anything from this game the way we played. i think the tactics were wrong - valencia really disappointed and i'm not sure why he wasn't taken off instead off scholsey.

the referee also had a shocker, carragher should have got a straight red for bringing down owen the way he did. liverpool got away with lots of fouls but they won the game and credit to them for that. let's see if they can build upon this in the coming months!

lol billa at least i showed up, at least i didn't go into hiding like you normally do.

i still maintain liverpool are a 2 man team. torres is world class, i've said that before. the only other effective player you had in your team was benayoun.

anyway you beat us twice last season but we had the last laugh. will it be the same story this time round? i certainly think so! it would be better if you saved these kind of performances for other, more important games.

Seriously though, why don't Liverpool show the same spirit against other teams, as they do against Man United? It's as if you put all the effort in to this one fixture and are not as bothered about the other games. Yeah you can boast about winning the big fixture but as with last season, you can enjoy the moment but not much more than that.

You're lacking consistency at the moment. I knew this would happen, I absolutely knew they were going to lose today, it's just too predictable!

worst patch in 50 years but nevertheless LFC 4 LIFE! these moments define the characteristic of true liverpool fans. all the non-LFC fans that take more pleasure from our miseries than their own team's accomplishments can lap it up. there's nothing you can say or do that can break us. our spirit lives on through the lyrics you hear in our song: you'll never walk alone!

for the most part of tonight's game, we played well considering our injury problems. we can't fault anyone since even the players on the pitch were not 100% fit. they tried to the best of their ability. i went into this game thinking we'd lose since lyon are flying high and average 2 goals per champions league game. liverpool went into it on the back of their worst patch in the last 50 years, with an injury list the length of my arm, away from home so to have the resolve to quieten the fans and control the majority the game proved we can do it, albeit partially relying on lyon to win against fiorentina in 2 weeks.

YNWA!

I think last season you'd reached your peak and everyone thought that this season would be the one when you finally make it, you've been getting closer and closer each season but you didn't build on that by investing in the squad.

I seriously feel for Torres, the dude is out there suffering, a player of his quality deserves a lot better. He needs a strike partner and he needs the service. Babel should be playing from the start and you need to get rid of Voronin.

Voronin was terrible last night. He tries hard but asking him to fill Gerrards boots is a bit much for 99% of players let alone Voronin!
He cant do it.

It was a good performance. Very well played and hard work all over the pitch.

Mascha and Lucas were immense.

Lucas finally seems to be winning over some fans. Good on the lad.

Mascherano was man of the match for me. He was everywhere. Quality.

Babel never performs when he starts a match. Seems better coming off the bench.
And is so bloody frustrating! A moment of genius with the goal followed by a free kick that went for a throw in the far side of the pitch!
WTF!

Guy has pace, power, skill and talent... why it wont all come together I dont know.

Good game, good performance. Lyon got the rub of the green. We didnt. Happens.

I dont think Fiorentina are all too great a team either. Am sure we can beat them.
Just need Lyon to do the same even though they have qualified.

Coming top of the group might not suit them... cos teams like Real and Barca will probably be 2nd in their groups.

we did well yesterday, controlled game, lucas and masc bossed the midfield
3 main problems

-carragher had so much space up the field which he didnt expose[johnson wouldve loved it]
-the greek is crap
-veronator-has got no confidence in him what so ever

i woudve played darby and put carra and agger in centre defence, and played babel on left and benayoun behind torres

we were just unlucky last night, was pleased with performace
